“Pretend” competition

Have you ever worked in an organisation where it seems like there is more effort expended on  “internal competition” - department against department, colleague against colleague, “us vs them” - than there is on competing in the market against the “real” external competitors?

If you’re going to manufacture internal competition, at least let it be a positive fiction. Why not aim for a goal that cannot actually be objectively measured or reached, but is nevertheless a desirable and aspirational direction to move in?

Would you like to work for an organisation that openly strives to be “the best company to work for in the world”, “the most flexible company to work for in the country”, or even to have “the happiest employees in town”?
